More usable ground for your horses and your farm
From a muddy gate to a dedicated turnout lot, we focus on how your horses use the space and how you manage it. Each project starts with the existing ground, water flow, access, and your goals.
Dry lots
Create a dedicated area for turnout and daily care while giving pasture a break. We discuss location, layout, site preparation, and surface materials around your property and intended use. Dry lots are great for keeping your horse’s and livestock’s feet dry during the wet months. Dry lot construction is heavily dependent on current drainage and water-run off around the area intended for the lot. Construction can range from just a finish layer of quarter-down, to a more in depth build of large base stone and a fine top layer
Heavy-use lots & high-traffic areas
Improve ground around gates, feeding areas, water stations, and other spots that take repeated traffic. Preparation and material choices are based on the existing soil, drainage, and wear. Construction of heavy-use areas includes a larger base stone topped with a finer material.
Pasture regrading & land improvements
Reshape uneven areas, address ruts and low spots, and improve the usability of your pasture. We review slopes, water movement, and the areas you want to improve before agreeing on a targeted grading plan.
grading around run-in sheds
Refresh uneven ground around an existing run-in shed or prepare an area for a planned shelter. We discuss access, surface elevations, and material placement around the structure and nearby fencing.
Built from firsthand experience
I’m Matt, the owner and operator of Iron Acre. After building a dry lot for our own ponies and regrading our property in Thompson’s Station, I know how much useful ground matters. You’ll work directly with me to plan your project and agree on the scope.
Equine land improvements
Customer wanted to add a second run-in shed to compliment the existing one and add more usable cover for horses and goats. The manure pile was also starting to encroach on the area.
Topsoil was stripped and the area was regraded. This provided a solid foundation for the new shed and allows for water to run out and away from the structures. Manure was removed and relocated on the property
A plan for the ground beneath your horses
A durable surface starts with the site. We review soil conditions, soft spots, slopes, and where water comes from and needs to go. Simply covering a wet area with stone may not address the underlying problem.
We discuss excavation, grading, base and surface materials, compaction, and fabric where appropriate. The agreed scope also considers equipment access, fencing, existing structures, and how the area will be maintained.
From first contact to finished project

Yes. We offer targeted pasture regrading, land improvements, and light grading around existing or planned run-in sheds. We review slopes, access, fencing, and existing structures before recommending the work.

The site and intended use guide material selection. We discuss the base, surface, depth, compaction, and fabric where appropriate after reviewing ground conditions and water flow. There is no single material or construction approach that fits every property. ¾ - 1” clean limestone is a common use for a properly draining base stone. We routinely use Quarter-down for the final top layer. It compacts nicely and makes for a nice footing for your animals.
